square foot gardening.

My Mother’s Day gift this year was a garden! I am SO excited to have my very first garden. It has already been so much fun to plant and water everything as a family. I actually received my present early because we were just too excited to get everything started!

We decided to go with the square foot method of gardening. The basic concept is that you have a container garden with a special soil mix and only plant a few plants per each square foot. This supposedly allows you to plant less, weed less and yield more. We will see how it goes!

We planted some seeds and some plants. Here’s what we have growing: onions, radishes, carrots, squash, zucchini, buttercrisp lettuce, red leaf lettuce, cucumbers, kale, tomatoes, red peppers, artichokes, green beans and strawberries. We found strawberry plants that can be harvested the same year they are planted, so we are pretty cheesed about that. We may have to go back and get a blackberry or blueberry plant too. My kids would definitely appreciate that!

Gardens are wonderful! And with you being such a fine cook, I’m sure you will enjoy it even that much more!
