December 17, 2005. We were supposed to be having a baby shower that day. My favorite green maternity shirt and black pants were pressed and set out on the ironing board. Just a little before 6:00 a.m., my water broke and we were off to the hospital! I guess you had decided that you would like to be a guest at the baby shower as well 🙂 At 11:45 p.m., we welcomed our sweet little girl into the world. Weighing in at 5 lbs., 2 oz., you were (and still are)tiny, but your personality is anything but!

You are quite the entertainer. Wherever we go, strangers feel the need to tell me how special and interesting you are! This is probably why we have had the “stranger talk” about 500 times. You never did go through that whole separation anxiety thing.

You are an amazing big sister. You are protective of your little brother and constantly exclaiming how sweet and cute you think he is. One of my favorite things is that it just never occurred to you that Miles is any different from other children. You even assumed that you, too, had a shunt as a baby and required physical therapy to learn to walk. You were very surprised to learn that these were not things that all children must do.

You can be found quite often giving grammar and nutrition advice to your peers. This cracks me up! Just yesterday, I made the mistake of giving you some chocolate cheerios for breakfast. You promptly reminded me that chocolate cheerios “are not good for you. I need to go get a piece of fruit or something healthy.”

You love blue cheese, blackberries, mangoes, pasta, squash and have even asked for broccoli and clementines as part of your birthday dinner.

When you are not in a costume, you spend your time drawing and coloring. Making grocery lists is also great fun. You are still very interested in letters and are able to sound out most 3-4 letter words.

You love all things pink, glittery, frilly and fluffy. The fancier and more over the top, the better, yet you are not afraid of anything. You are fiercely independent.  Yeah, you may be a little on the bossy side, but something about that seems strangely comfortable 🙂 I just know you are going to do great things in this life.

The other day, you told me that you want to be a ballerina, a princess and a doctor. If anyone can do it, it’s you!

Happy 5th Birthday,

Greta!
